Scratch and Scribble

Broadworks by Hive Curates 2026

These works are part of an ongoing investigation into the characteristics of deteriorated peeling paint as it breaks away from its substrate. I record, replicate, interpret and amplify the essence and materiality of these layers focusing on the state of change. These paintings are made through processes of construction, deconstruction, reconstruction, and restoration using skins of acrylic paints, scraped layers of paint, and lines drawn with paint pens. I hope that the qualities I embed in the making of the pieces encourages a reflection on, and questioning of, what we value.

My art practice uses the physical act of making as a means of thinking. Iconsider the boundaries of imperfection, incompleteness, and impermanence drawn from the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi Sabi. My studio practice sits alongside my Taijiquan and Qigong practice, both exploring the balance of complementary opposites in Ying and Yang theory.
